How long does hpd take to approve an apartment application

Hello everyone! I was selected for a housing connect apartment. I sent all my documents in, then sent in a few more. The landlord had me fill out some paperwork and get some document notarized and after that said they were sending my paperwork to HPD for approval. This was a month ago. Ugh. I keep checking in with them and they keep saying they haven't heard back from HPD yet. How long is this wait supposed to be? I've heard of people getting approved in a week to 2 weeks. I'm starting to lose hope. Though when I went to see the place they basically told me the apartment would be mind pending approval because nobody else wanted to take it. Idk. My child and I are in a shelter and the conditions are bad and I just really want to hurry and move. Can anyone tell me why it's taking so long. I even stopped looking for other apartments because I thought this was gonna be it .

Do you happen to know if you building is completely built already? Idk how often that happens specifically but I know mine building isn't finished, and probably won't be for a while.

Yes it’s already finished and people have been living there. It’s a lottery i applied for like 2 years ago. So it already has residents. They just have an apartment open

Try your best not to worry. HPD moves at its own pace regardless of the 3-5 days they claim it takes for approval, and they could be backlogged. You can call them and someone should tell you what is going on with your application. The number is 212-863-6300.

I hope you’re approved and able to move soon.

Thanks for your wishes, and providing the number! Yes I’m trying not to lose hope. This shelter we are in is just ridiculous. They don’t care about us help us or fix anything here. There’s holes in this apartment and I’ve been asking them to fix them for the longest. Literally every week I’m picking up a mouse on a trap

You’re welcome. These forums have been a source of help and relief for me, so I’m happy to help anyone seeking the same.

When you contact HPD, give them the name of the development and your log number. You can explain to them that you were told your application had been sent to them over a month ago, so you’d like an update.

I wouldn't stress too much about it but I do know that once you look at the unit, the turnaround time from there to HPD approval is within' 2 weeks and then lease signing and move in a week or two after.

At least that's how it was for me.

You should understand they probably move on their own terms so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Worst case scenario, if it's rejected, they'll reach back out to you.
